A vertical termination is not automatically compliant because it rises above the roof. It must work in plan and section against intakes, openings, walkways, roof geometry, adjacent structures, and the listed vent system.

Rooftop coordination fails when the vent is reviewed only as a height. Mechanical-draft termination is spatial: both horizontal separation and vertical relationship control whether discharge, access, intake protection, and building geometry work together.

Technical Basis and Scope

This article explains the owner-supplied IMC 2024 provisions as model-code education. The adopted code, amendments, appliance and vent listings, manufacturer instructions, existing conditions, fuel-gas requirements, and AHJ direction control a real project.

Plain-English Control

The owner-supplied 804.3.5 content identifies vertical-termination controls for adjacent walkways, forced-air inlets within the stated horizontal review range, roof structures, doors/windows/gravity air inlets, vent caps, and separation from roof structure. Verify every stated dimension against the adopted code, appliance and vent listing, manufacturer instructions, and actual roof geometry.

Field and Permit Impact

A vent can clear a roof surface yet still be too close to a higher roof, parapet, penthouse, outdoor-air intake, opening, or pedestrian route. Missed conflicts can drive recirculation, draft-performance problems, corrosion/staining, water entry, carbon-monoxide exposure, rework, and failed inspection.

Review Path

Run two coordinated checks. In plan, measure horizontal separation to intakes, openings, equipment, and roof structures. In section/elevation, verify relative height, roof relationships, cap, discharge path, and walkways. Reconcile the result with manufacturer instructions and any project-specific wind or enclosure conditions that need qualified design review.

Do / Do Not

Do review plan and section together. - Do identify the vent cap and listing/manufacturer basis. - Do not check only height above roof. - Do not ignore higher roofs, parapets, intake elevations, or roof-access routes.

Field Tip

Add a roof-section callout wherever a termination is near a change in roof elevation or a parapet. A dimension visible only in plan rarely proves the vertical relationship that actually governs the conflict.
