A horizontal termination that fits on the mechanical plan can still point combustion products toward a walkway, opening, outdoor-air intake, meter, grade condition, adjacent building, or property line. Review needs an overlay, not a note alone.

Technical Basis and Scope

This article explains the owner-supplied IMC 2024 provisions as model-code education. The adopted code, amendments, appliance and vent listings, manufacturer instructions, existing conditions, fuel-gas requirements, and AHJ direction control a real project.

Plain-English Control

The supplied 804.3.3 source states that chimneys or vents with power exhausters terminate at least 10 feet from lot lines and adjacent buildings and discharge away from the building. The supplied 804.3.4 source identifies horizontal mechanical-draft controls for walkways, forced-air inlets, doors, windows, gravity air inlets, interior corners, oil-tank vents, gas meters, and finished grade. The stated dimensions are code-specific controls; verify them against the adopted text and actual system type.

Field and Permit Impact

A termination can meet one dimension and still create recirculation, carbon-monoxide exposure, staining, corrosion, pedestrian conflict, utility conflict, or failed inspection. The risk increases when architecture, site, civil, landscape, utility, and mechanical information are drawn in separate models or sheets.

Review Path

Overlay the mechanical termination with architecture and site information. Identify every applicable receiving condition, verify the discharge vector, dimension the required separations, and resolve conflicts before construction documents release. If an adjacent condition is unknown, flag it as a field-verification hold instead of assuming clear wall space is compliant space.

Do dimension to openings, inlets, corners, grade, utilities, property constraints, and adjacent buildings as applicable. - Do show discharge direction. - Do not approve a location from the mechanical sheet alone. - Do not leave the final termination location to field judgment.

Field Tip

Use plan, elevation, and site views together. The horizontal plan exposes setbacks and intake conflicts; the elevation exposes openings, discharge direction, grade, and pedestrian exposure. A single-view check routinely misses the conflict that fails inspection.
