IMC 603 is where duct design stops being conceptual and becomes buildable. This section is not just about duct sizing. It is about pressure class, materials, joints, supports, penetrations, protection, and the field details that decide whether the system is durable, code-compliant, and installable.
This is also one of the easiest sections to under-document. The plans may show duct paths and air quantities, but if the set does not clearly define construction class, sealing method, flex limitations, penetration details, support criteria, and exposure conditions, the review comments write themselves.
We'll cover IMC 603 in six parts:

Required air distribution, fire-protection coordination, sizing methods, duct pressure classification, and metallic vs nonmetallic duct rules.
Part 2 (603.6-603.6.4): Flexible ducts and flexible connectors
UL 181 listing, Class 0/Class 1, connector length limit, penetration prohibitions, temperature limits, and appliance clearances.
Part 3 (603.7-603.10): Penetrations, underground ducts, joints/seams, and supports
Garage separation details, underground slope/sealing/testing, plastic underground duct limits, closure systems, and support requirements.
Part 4 (603.11-603.16): Clearance, condensation, flood hazard, location, protection, and weather
Furnace clearances, preventing exterior condensation, flood-zone duct design, earth clearance, mechanical protection, and exterior weather protection.
Part 5 (603.17): Air dispersion systems
Where they are allowed, pressure limitations, fire-rated construction restrictions, and UL 2518 listing.
Part 6 (603.18-603.18.2): Registers, grilles, diffusers, and balancing access
Installation, balancing means, access, floor-register load resistance, and prohibited locations.
On Plans: Why it matters
Most IMC 603 failures are not load-calc failures. They are detailing failures: wrong duct class, no sealing basis, poor penetration details, unsupported underground assumptions, exterior exposure ignored, or no access to balancing devices.

M-001 must identify the duct construction standard (SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards or IMC Table 603.4) and the pressure class for each duct system.
Duct schedule must show gauge, seam type, reinforcement, and joint sealant for each system - a schedule that says 'per SMACNA' without pressure class and gauge will be flagged.
Confirm the duct leakage test class and test protocol are specified on M-001 and in the specifications - not deferred to the contractor.
Review Risk:
Duct constructed to the wrong gauge or construction class - because multiple contractors interpreted the drawings differently - is a common phased-construction problem.
Non-conforming duct fabricated and installed before shop drawings were reviewed cannot be returned - require shop drawing submittals before fabrication begins.

Duct sizing and construction are the two most reviewed items in a mechanical submittal and the two most common sources of field conflicts. Confirm the permit set includes: duct sizing shown on plans (not just duct type), material and gauge called out by system type, and a clear insulation schedule with R-value, vapor retarder location, and exception basis if applicable.
Drawing / Submittal Check
M-001 must identify the duct construction standard: SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards, IMC Table 603.4 (round duct), or another referenced standard. Confirm the pressure class for each duct system and note that the duct schedule shows gauge, seam, and joint requirements consistent with the pressure class. A duct system without a stated construction standard is an automatic comment.
Common Review Risk
Duct construction non-conformance - duct that was not built to the scheduled gauge and construction class - is a common problem on projects with multiple duct contractors or phased construction. The remedy is either a full replacement or a certified statement from the contractor that the installed duct meets the required standard. Neither is inexpensive. Specify duct shop drawings and a pre-installation conference for large projects.
When To Escalate
Escalate when the duct system includes specialty duct types (stainless, aluminum, fiberglass, air dispersion fabric) that are not routinely fabricated or inspected by the local AHJ. Specialty duct systems may require a pre-application meeting with the building department to confirm the inspection protocol before the permit is filed.
Rated Assembly Coordination
Duct construction standards in Chapter 603 apply to ducts at all locations, but rated assembly crossings add a second layer of requirements. Identify all rated assemblies the duct system crosses at project kickoff so the right penetration details are drawn from the start.
Load Assumption Check
Duct construction standards affect system static pressure, which drives fan selection and motor size. Confirm that the duct pressure class and sealing level assumed in the static pressure calculation match the construction standard specified on the drawings.
