IMC 601 is where duct-system compliance starts, but for plan review this section is really about boundaries. It controls where air is allowed to move, where return-air paths become code issues, and where contamination or life-safety conflicts are created.
This is also one of those sections that gets missed because the drawings may look coordinated until you trace the actual air path. A corridor return, an exit enclosure fan tied to general HVAC, or a return grille in the wrong room can turn into an easy redline.
We'll cover IMC 601 in five parts:

Why it matters
Common stalls are predictable: corridor return paths shown without a valid exception, corridor ceiling plenums with no fire/smoke basis, exit enclosure ventilation tied into general HVAC, return grilles in prohibited spaces, and exception language cited in notes but not actually supported on the plans.

M-001 / code notes: IMC 601 basis of design, corridor restrictions, return-air limitations, and exception notes.
Plans: supply, return, transfer, plenum, shaft, and exit-enclosure air paths clearly identified.
Enlarged plans/details: corridor ceiling plenum conditions, closet return details, shaft/rated construction interfaces, and special return conditions.
Airflow summary / schedules: room-by-room supply vs. return relationship and any exception-based return approach.
Sequences / control diagrams: smoke detector shutdown, sprinkler waterflow shutdown, interlocks, and any life-safety coordination points.
A / E / FP coordination: rated corridors, exits, shafts, detectors, waterflow inputs, and opening protection.

Section 601.2: Corridors cannot be used as return air paths unless a specific exception applies - the exception must be noted on the plan.
Section 601.2.1: Corridor ceiling plenums require fire/smoke dampers and the space must qualify as a plenum per Section 202.
Section 601.5: Return air openings are prohibited from combustion appliance rooms, dwelling units, and certain high-risk spaces.

Verify return air opening locations are shown on the floor plan and none are in prohibited locations per Section 601.5.
Confirm exit enclosure ventilation is independent from all other air systems and intake/discharge locations are shown.

A duct system without material and insulation callouts on the drawings generates comments on every section of the review. Put the duct schedule or material legend on M-001 before any other mechanical sheets.
Drawing / Submittal Check
M-001 must identify the duct system type (supply, return, exhaust) and the construction class (pressure class, velocity class) for each system. The construction class drives the SMACNA standard, the duct gauge, and the joint and seam requirements. If the project uses multiple duct systems at different pressure classes, confirm each is labeled on the drawings.

When To Escalate
Escalate when the duct system pressure class is not confirmed before the permit is filed - when the mechanical engineer has assumed a pressure class but the actual system static pressure is higher. A duct system that was designed at the wrong pressure class requires a re-specification of gauge and construction, a duct shop drawing revision, and potentially a permit amendment.
Rated Assembly Coordination
Chapter 601 sets the rules for where duct systems can and cannot run relative to exits, rated enclosures, and separation walls. Resolve these routing constraints against the architectural rated assembly plan before the duct layout is drawn.
