Smoke control only works if the inputs are real and the hardware survives the event. IMC 512.9-512.11 is where the report becomes fan temps, duct pressure, leakage testing, listed dampers, and standby power.

Plain English:

512.9 design fire sets the basis

Design fire must be based on rational analysis by the RDP and approved by the code official. Include fuel, fuel load, configuration, and whether the fire is steady or unsteady. If you assume sprinkler activation stops fire growth, document the engineering basis.

512.10 equipment must be suitable

Fans, ducts, dampers, and controls must be suitable for the temperatures/pressures your analysis predicts.

512.10.1 fan temperature rating (Ts)

Fan components must be rated/certified for the probable smoke temperature rise. Ts depends on fire heat output and exhaust rate. Dilution air can reduce Ts only if supported by the analysis.

512.10.2 duct strength + leakage testing

Ducts must withstand predicted temps/pressures, be built per Chapter 6, and be supported from fire-resistance-rated structure with noncombustible supports. Leak test to 1.5x max design pressure; leakage must be <=5% of design flow and documented.

512.10.4 dampers

Automatic dampers used for smoke control must be listed to recognized standards.

512.10.5 fan hardware + motors

Belt-driven fans need at least 2 belts and 1.5x belt count for design duty. Provide fan curves/calcs. Motors can't exceed nameplate hp; minimum service factor 1.15.

512.11 standby power + room requirements

Smoke control needs standby power per IBC 2702. Standby power/transfer switches must be in a separate 1-hour rated room, ventilated directly outdoors. Provide UPS coverage for "volatile memory" components for a 15-minute outage, plus surge protection where needed.

On Plans: Why it matters

Smoke control usually fails on documentation: unrealistic design fire assumptions, unrated fans, leaky ducts, unlisted dampers, or power that drops during the event.

Code Path: Where to show it

Smoke Control Report: design fire basis + Ts assumptions + fan/duct suitability.

M sheets: fan temp rating, duct leak test note (1.5x / <=5%), damper listing note, standby power note.

E sheets: standby power/ATS + UPS notes for smoke control controls.

Check: Do

Write the design fire assumptions and equipment ratings so plan review and commissioning match the same basis.

Review Risk: Don't

Don't assume sprinklers "solve" the design fire without documenting the engineering basis.

Field Tip:

Add a "SMOKE CONTROL HARDWARE CHECK" box per system: DESIGN FIRE BASIS + Ts + FAN RATING + DUCT LEAK TEST (1.5x / <=5%) + DAMPER LISTINGS + STANDBY POWER/UPS. If any line is blank, you know what will stall approval.

Smoke control exhaust per 512.7 must demonstrate that the rate of smoke production does not exceed the exhaust capacity at the design fire size. Confirm the design fire size basis (sprinklered vs non-sprinklered, occupancy type), the exhaust cfm per zone, and the makeup air path are documented on the mechanical and structural drawings and coordinated with the fire alarm sequence of operations.

Drawing / Submittal Check

For 512.9-512.11.2 (controls, power, standby): the smoke control controls must be shown on a controls schematic cross-referenced to the fire alarm drawings. Standby power for smoke control fans must be shown on the electrical drawings with the transfer time and the load calculation. Smoke control systems without a dedicated controls schematic will get a comment.

Common Review Risk

Smoke control standby power assignments are frequently missed in electrical coordination. The smoke control fan is listed on the mechanical schedule as requiring standby power, but the electrical panel schedule shows it on a normal circuit. Confirm the standby power assignment is on the electrical panel schedule before the electrical permit is filed.

When To Escalate

Escalate when the smoke control standby power requirement cannot be met with the existing emergency power system and the generator upgrade cost is in dispute. Smoke control is a life-safety system - its standby power requirement is not negotiable. The cost must be resolved during design, not during construction.

Rated Assembly Coordination

Sections 512.9-512.11.2 address testing, commissioning, and standby power for smoke control systems. Confirm that rated shaft penetrations, damper actuator wiring, and emergency power connections are coordinated with the electrical and fire alarm drawings.

Load Assumption Check

Smoke control system testing (512.9-512.11.2) requires that measured airflow match the design values. Confirm the design CFM for each smoke zone is documented on the drawings so the TAB contractor and the special inspector have the same acceptance criteria.
