512.5 smoke barriers must meet IBC 709 and stay within maximum leakage area ratios:

Walls: A/Aw = 0.00100

Interior exit stairs/ramps + exit passageways: A/Aw = 0.00035

Enclosed exit access stairs/ramps + other shafts: A/Aw = 0.00150

Floors/roofs: A/AF = 0.00050

Note: ratios do not include door gaps or operable windows.

512.5.1 total leakage area

Total leakage = (gross barrier area x ratio) + door gaps/windows/other openings.

512.5.2 testing

Pressurization systems: show compliance by achieving required ΔP across the barrier in smoke mode.

Passive systems: verify via door fan testing or other approved method.

512.5.3 openings must be protected

Openings in smoke barriers need automatic-closing devices tied to smoke control. Doors must be compliant smoke barrier door assemblies (IBC).

512.5.3.2 ducts/transfer openings

Ducts and transfer openings through smoke barriers require a minimum Class II, 250 degrees F smoke damper (per IBC).

On Plans: Why it matters

If leakage and openings aren't addressed, you won't hold pressure, smoke will bypass the zone, and commissioning turns into rework (doors, dampers, and transfer paths).

Life safety: smoke zones/barrier extents + door locations at each barrier.

Door schedule/details: smoke barrier door + automatic-closing method.

Mechanical: every duct/transfer opening crossing a smoke barrier tagged with a smoke damper.

Smoke control report: leakage assumptions and ΔP verification method.

Check: Do

Tag every smoke-barrier opening with its protection method (auto-closing door or smoke damper). Include leakage assumptions in the smoke control report so the ΔP math matches construction.

Review Risk: Don't

Don't let transfer grilles/corridor returns cross smoke barriers without smoke dampers.

Field Tip:

Run a "BARRIER TRACE" on the plans: trace each smoke barrier and count every opening it crosses. If an opening isn't tagged with a protection method, expect a commissioning failure.

Exhaust smoke control inlet location is the most common field correction on smoke control systems. Inlets positioned too low will draw from the clear layer instead of the smoke layer - the system runs but does not remove the smoke. Confirm the inlet location above the design smoke layer height on the section drawings.

When To Escalate

Escalate when the exhaust smoke control inlet location conflicts with the architectural design of the space - when the designer cannot accept inlets in the visible portion of the ceiling or wall without compromising the design intent. Smoke control inlet location conflicts require a coordinated design process involving the architect, the mechanical engineer, and the fire protection engineer.
