504.11 common multistory dryer systems

For a shared vertical dryer shaft (typical in mid/high-rise):

Shaft: fire-resistance-rated per IBC.

No dampers in the common exhaust duct; penetrations protected per IMC 607.5.5 Exception 2.

Duct in shaft: rigid metal, min 26-gauge sheet steel, per SMACNA, and run straight (no offsets).

Exhaust fan motor: designed per 503.2, located outside the airstream.

Fan: runs continuously and is on standby power.

Monitoring: fan status monitored; fan failure triggers an audible or visual signal.

Provide makeup air for the system.

Cleanout: min 12 in x 12 in opening at base of shaft.

No screens at terminations.

System serves clothes dryers only and is independent of other exhaust systems.

On Plans: Why it matters

In commercial and multistory buildings, dryer exhaust is a life-safety system. Wrong fan location, dampers in the shaft, offsets full of lint, or shared shafts with other exhaust can turn a convenience shaft into a vertical fire and smoke path.

M-101: Clearly show dryer shafts, fan, and termination locations; note "COMMON MULTISTORY DRYER SHAFT PER IMC 504.11" at the shaft.

Check: Do

Coordinate shaft size, rating, and straight routing early with the architect.

Place the fan where it can be serviced, kept out of the airstream, tied to standby power, and monitored.

Treat commercial dryer connectors as transition ducts: single-piece, UL 2158A, max 8 ft, fully exposed.

Review Risk: Don't

Don't add fire/smoke dampers in common dryer exhaust ducts.

Don't share the common dryer shaft with toilets, kitchens, or other exhausts.

Don't bury or daisy-chain flex behind rows of commercial dryers.

Field Tip:

At your dryer shaft detail, add a one-line checklist note:

"RATED SHAFT, 26 GA RIGID, NO OFFSETS/NO DAMPERS, FAN OUT OF AIRSTREAM ON STANDBY POWER, MONITORED, 12x12 CLEANOUT, DRYERS ONLY." It puts every 504.11 requirement where the contractor and reviewer actually look.

Multi-family dryer exhaust systems routed through a common duct are permitted only with listed systems designed for that purpose - typically involving makeup air, individual unit dampers, and booster fans. Single-family system assumptions do not scale to multi-dryer systems. Confirm the system type and listing basis are on M-001 before drawing duct routing.

Drawing / Submittal Check

For 504.10 (dryer in multifamily) and 504.11 (factory-built makeup air systems): the drawings must show the individual dryer venting vs. common duct system configuration. For common duct systems, show the makeup air damper control sequence and confirm the system is tested per the manufacturer's protocol. Systems shown with a common duct but without the required makeup air controls will not pass first review.

Common Review Risk

For multifamily common dryer exhaust systems (504.10): the most common failure is an exhaust system that was balanced for a certain number of units but not field-tested after more units were added during phased construction. Common duct systems must be tested at full capacity. A system designed for 20 units that is tested with only 10 units may not perform correctly when all 20 are running.

When To Escalate

Escalate for common dryer exhaust systems in mixed-use buildings where the dryer exhaust must share a shaft with other mechanical systems. Shaft coordination in mixed-use buildings frequently involves the fire authority (smoke control implications), the building department (rated shaft), and the mechanical engineer - a pre-application meeting with all parties prevents the most common conflicts.

Rated Assembly Coordination

Commercial dryer exhaust trunks (504.10-504.11) running through rated floor assemblies in multistory buildings need penetration protection at each floor. Confirm firestop or damper type and listing for each floor penetration on the riser drawing.

Duct System Coordination

Sections 504.10-504.11 cover multiple-dryer commercial installations with shared exhaust trunks. Size the common duct for simultaneous operation and show individual branch connections with backdraft dampers.
