504.5 dryer exhaust duct power ventilators: Domestic dryer runs, can only use a listed dryer exhaust duct power ventilator (DEDPV), labeled to UL 705.

Plain English:

504.5 dryer exhaust duct power ventilators: Domestic dryer runs, can only use a listed dryer exhaust duct power ventilator (DEDPV), labeled to UL 705 and specifically approved for dryer exhaust. Install it exactly per the manufacturer-location, max length, controls, and wiring are part of the listing.

504.6 booster fans prohibited: Generic "inline booster fans" are not allowed in domestic dryer exhaust. If it's not a listed DEDPV for dryer use, it doesn't belong in the dryer exhaust duct.

504.7 makeup air: If the installation exhausts more than 200 cfm, you must provide makeup air.

For a dryer closet: you need at least 100 in^2 of opening area in the enclosure (or another approved makeup-air method).

The goal is to prevent starving the dryer and backdrafting nearby combustion appliances.

504.8-504.8.1 protection against physical damage: Where nails or screws are likely to hit the dryer duct and there is less than 1 1/4 in from duct to finished face of framing, you must provide steel shield plates on the finished face of framing, extending at least 2 in above sole plates and below top plates, minimum 0.0575 in (16-gauge) steel.

On Plans: Why it matters

"HERO" fixes in the field are often illegal: generic booster fans, no makeup air in tight closets, and unprotected ducts pierced by drywall screws. IMC 504.5-504.8.1 is where you prove the dryer exhaust was actually designed to move air and stay safe.

Code Path: Where to show it

M-001: Note that domestic dryer exhaust runs use UL 705-listed dryer exhaust duct power ventilators only (no generic boosters) and require makeup air if exhaust >200 cfm, with 100 in^2 minimum opening in closets or approved equivalent.

M-101: Indicate any DEDPV locations and show dryer closets with "MIN 100 IN^2 MAKEUP AIR OPENING" or equivalent detail.

M-601: Dryer exhaust schedule fields for POWER VENTILATOR (Y/N, MODEL), EXHAUST CFM, MAKEUP AIR PROVIDED (Y/N / METHOD), and SHIELD PLATES REQD (Y/N).

Check: Do

Use only listed dryer exhaust duct power ventilators when you need to extend run length.

Check total exhaust cfm and flag any installations >200 cfm for makeup air.

Call out 100 in^2 minimum free area for dryer closets unless another approved method is documented.

Review Risk: Don't

Don't specify generic inline booster fans in domestic dryer exhaust.

Field Tip:

Create a "DRYER EXHAUST QA" stamp for your internal redlines with three checkboxes: "LISTED DEDPV (IF USED)," "MAKEUP AIR >200 CFM VERIFIED," and "SHIELD PLATES REQD? (<1 1/4 IN TO FRAMING)." Drop it next to every dryer run during your check set; if any box is blank, you know exactly what still needs to be coordinated.

Dryer exhaust duct length limits (35 ft maximum equivalent, deducting 2.5 ft per 45-degree elbow and 5 ft per 90-degree elbow) must be calculated and shown. Do not use a single aggregate length - show the total route with elbow count and equivalent-length math on M-501. If the required length exceeds 35 ft, a listed booster fan or an ASHRAE 62.2-alternative length calculation is required and must be on the drawings.

Drawing / Submittal Check

For power-ventilated dryer exhaust systems: the drawings must show the powered ventilator, the control sequence interlocking the dryer with the fan, and the makeup air path if the system creates negative pressure. The ventilator performance must be shown in the schedule at the actual static pressure it operates against - not at free-air conditions. A powered dryer exhaust set without a controls sequence for the interlock will get a comment.

Common Review Risk

Powered dryer exhaust fans without proper interlocks are an inspection failure. The fan must prove airflow before the dryer can operate - a missing sail switch or end-switch interlock is a life-safety issue (dryer fires from restricted exhaust). Confirm the interlock sequence is shown on the drawings and that the field team understands it before the dryer is energized.

When To Escalate

Escalate when the powered dryer exhaust interlock must coordinate with a building management system or a fire alarm system that was not designed by the mechanical engineer. Controls interlocks that cross discipline boundaries - mechanical exhaust interlock with fire alarm or BMS - require a controls sequence document that all disciplines must review and approve before construction.

Duct System Coordination

Power ventilator and makeup air requirements for dryer systems change duct sizing and termination location. Where a booster fan is used, show the duct length before and after the fan on the riser diagram.
