On mechanical sheets, "required exhaust" is where IMC, IFC, and NFPA all meet. IMC 502 is the map that tells you when exhaust is optional comfort air... and when it is mandatory for life safety, hazardous materials, and special processes. If you miss a required system, you do not just get redlines-you risk a full redesign.
We'll cover 502 in four parts:
Part 1 (502.1-502.1.4): Core rules. When exhaust is required because of dust, fumes, vapors, spray, smoke, heat, and odors; where to locate inlets; low-level exhaust in fuel-dispensing areas; and how to keep equipment/service rooms from contaminating the rest of the building.
Part 2 (502.2-502.7.7): Special operations. Aircraft fueling compartments, battery-charging areas, storage batteries, dry cleaning plants, flammable finishes, spray booths, dipping operations, electrostatic and powder coating, and floor resurfacing-with specific CFM per square foot and air velocity targets.
Part 3 (502.8-502.10.3): Hazardous materials and HPM. Storage and use above MAQs, gas rooms, exhausted enclosures, treatment systems, compressed gases (medical and industrial), cryogenics, flammable and combustible liquids, highly toxic/toxic liquids and gases, and HPM fabrication areas.
Part 4 (502.11-502.20.1): Specialty occupancies. Motion picture projectors, organic coating processes, public garages, motor-vehicle exhaust capture, repair garages (including lighter-than-air fuels), tire recapping, bathrooms and "specific rooms," indoor firing ranges, and nail salons(manicure/pedicure stations).
Why it matters
Required exhaust not shown at all (or treated as "optional" comfort exhaust).
Hazardous exhaust tied into environmental exhaust or return air.
Wrong capture location (high wall grille instead of low exhaust where vapors are heavier than air).
Missing CFM/ft^2 or velocity criteria in spray, dipping, floor finishing, or HAZMAT areas.
Gas rooms, gas cabinets, and battery rooms shown with "generic exhaust" instead of the negative-pressure and treatment rules from 502 + IFC.

Section 502.1: Required exhaust applies when dust, fumes, vapors, spray, smoke, heat, or odors exist at levels that impair health or create fire/explosion risk.
Section 502.8: For spaces with hazardous materials above MAQ, both IMC 502 and IFC apply - confirm with the fire protection engineer.
Capture location matters: vapors heavier than air exhaust from low wall grilles; vapors lighter than air exhaust from high ceiling registers.

Confirm M-001 lists every space requiring mandatory exhaust under Section 502 by space name and applicable subsection.
Verify exhaust CFM and capture height (low or high) are correct for the contaminant type in each required exhaust space.
Confirm hazardous exhaust is not tied into general or return air systems - independence is mandatory per Section 502.
Review Risk:
A required exhaust space not identified - the most common 502 miss. Reviewers check occupancy schedules and floor plans against the 502 inventory.
Wrong capture height for the contaminant: a solvent spray area with a high exhaust grille instead of a low capture exhaust.
Gas rooms, gas cabinets, or battery rooms shown with generic exhaust instead of the required negative-pressure and treatment configuration.

Section 502 enforcement is about the source and makeup air, not just the exhaust cfm. Confirm the exhaust system classification is noted on M-001, the makeup air source is identified by zone, and any hazardous product exhaust routes through the correct section rather than general exhaust.
Drawing / Submittal Check
M-001 must list every space in the project that requires mechanical exhaust under IMC 502, with the required exhaust rate for each space, the exhaust system serving it, and the makeup air source. The list of required spaces (bathrooms, janitor closets, motor rooms, battery rooms, etc.) is commonly incomplete on first submittal - verify against the occupancy classification and occupancy load in the architectural drawings.
Common Review Risk
The most common 502 miss is a required exhaust space that was not identified. The reviewer checks the occupancy type and runs down the IMC 502 table - if any required space is missing, it is a comment. Common missed spaces: electrical rooms (battery backup), janitor closets, storage rooms with hazardous materials, motor rooms. Verify the space inventory against IMC 502 before submitting.
When To Escalate
Escalate when the required exhaust space inventory reveals spaces that were not in the original scope - the project expands to include a battery room, a spray booth, or a parking garage that was not anticipated. Scope expansions after the permit is filed require amendments and may change the routing of the permit. Identify required exhaust spaces before the permit application is submitted.
Special Condition-Battery Rooms
For battery rooms or charging areas, confirm the battery type, hazard basis, ventilation calculation, control sequence, alarm interface, exhaust path, and AHJ or fire-protection coordination are all traceable. The drawing set should not leave the safety logic implied.
Special Exhaust Coordination
For specialty exhaust, start with the contaminant and source. Then confirm capture method, duct material, routing, discharge, separation, controls, and whether another consultant or AHJ review is required.
