501.1 scope: Chapter 5 covers mechanical exhaust: dryers, kitchens, hazardous, dust/stock/refuse, subslab soil, smoke control, ERV exhaust, and systems.

Plain English:

501.1 scope: Chapter 5 covers mechanical exhaust: dryers, kitchens, hazardous, dust/stock/refuse, subslab soil, smoke control, ERV exhaust, and systems in 502.

501.2 independent systems: Environmental air exhaust must be separate from dryer, domestic kitchen, hazardous, and commercial kitchen exhaust. Type I stands alone; Type II only with other Type II.

501.3 discharge: Send exhaust outdoors where it won't re-enter or bother people. Never into attics or crawl spaces and not onto walkways. Limited exceptions for whole-house attic fans, listed commercial recirculating systems, and listed ductless range hoods when Chapter 4 ventilation is provided.

501.3.1 outlet location: Maintain minimum distances to property lines, openings, intakes, and grade based on exhaust type (explosive/flammable, other product-conveying, environmental air) and above IBC 1612 flood elevations.

501.3.2 opening protection: Use corrosion-resistant screens/louvers/grilles with 1/4-1/2 in openings, detailed for local weather. In hurricane regions, louvers must be AMCA 550 rated (tested for wind-driven rain so water stays out even when fans are off).

501.4-501.6: Keep required spaces neutral or negative; provide makeup air when exhaust and supply don't balance. If Chapter 5 is silent on duct construction, use Chapter 6. Common shafts for separate dwelling/sleeping units are only allowed when the shaft is held at negative pressure.

On Plans: Why it matters

Frequent stops: mixed exhausts that should be independent, outlets too close to intakes/openings or grade, attic/crawl terminations, missing AMCA 550 louvers in hurricane regions, and no clear makeup-air path.

Code Path: Where to show it

M-001: Exhaust separation rules, AMCA 550 note (if applicable), flood-elevation and makeup-air notes.

M-101/elevations: Dimensions from outlets to lot lines, openings, intakes, and grade; show discharge direction.

M-501/M-601: Termination details plus a simple termination separation schedule (required vs provided distances and height above grade).

Check: Do

Keep kitchen, dryer, and hazardous exhaust systems independent where required.

Dimension separations on plans and verify height above grade and flood limits.

Coordinate makeup air and pressure targets early with the architect and TAB.

Review Risk: Don't

Discharge into attics, crawl spaces, or toward walkways.

Place exhaust where it can be pulled back into intakes.

Forget screen size limits or AMCA 550 louvers in hurricane regions.

Set up a reusable "Exhaust Separation Schedule" on M-001 so every outlet lists the nearest opening/intake/lot line/grade with required and provided distances. It speeds approval and cuts late relocations.

For 501 compliance, three things must be on the drawings before submittal: (1) each exhaust system independently labeled by type with no cross-connections shown; (2) every exhaust termination dimensioned against the separation table in 501.3.1; (3) every outdoor termination protected with code-sized screen or louver, AMCA 550 compliance noted where required. Missing any one of these will generate a comment.

Drawing / Submittal Check

For projects with multiple exhaust systems: M-001 must list each exhaust system, its governing IMC section, the exhaust rate, the makeup air provision, and the discharge location. If any element is missing, the reviewer may hold the entire exhaust review until the matrix is complete - one summary table on M-001 keeps five systems from generating five separate

When To Escalate

Escalate when the combined exhaust systems on a project create a building air balance that is difficult to control - multiple large exhaust systems that cannot all run at full capacity simultaneously, or exhaust systems with variable-speed fans that interact with makeup air in complex ways. Document the worst-case scenario and confirm the makeup air can address it.

Rated Assembly Coordination

Exhaust system basics require that every duct penetrating a rated assembly be protected with the correct damper type. The summary check: verify damper type matches assembly type, listing is confirmed, and access is shown on the drawing.

Load Assumption Check

Exhaust system load assumptions include exhaust CFM by space, makeup air volume, outdoor air heating and cooling load, and fan static pressure. Confirm each of these is documented and traceable to the code section or calculation that established it.
