Where the project uses tested firestop systems, the selected system must match the actual field condition; do not cite unrelated standards or a generic fire-caulk note.
Mechanical, architectural/life-safety, structural, and fire-protection documents must agree on the assembly, opening, damper or protection strategy, and responsibility for final submittal and inspection evidence.
Check: Penetration Coordination
Cross-check the mechanical floor plan against the architectural rated-assembly plan and confirm the permit set identifies where the approved penetration protection is documented; the responsible sheet and submittal path are project- and AHJ-specific.
Confirm all fire and smoke dampers have an access path for inspection shown on the ceiling plan and noted in the damper schedule.
Verify structural penetrations for pipes and conduits are coordinated with the structural drawings and reference the applicable firestop system.
Review Risk:
Rated penetrations with no coordinated protection basis, or with a cited system that does not match the actual assembly and penetrant, create a life-safety and concealment risk.
Fire and smoke dampers require the access, installation, and inspection provisions of the governing code/listing; coordinate the service path in the permit and coordination documents.
Duct penetrations shown only on architectural drawings without corresponding firestop documentation on the mechanical drawings are a common coordination gap.

Each rated penetration lists a UL/Intertek design number and the specified products from that system (no generic "fire caulk").
New truss loads have a manufacturer bulletin or PE letter; refer to S-sheets.
CFS/steel holes reference AISI or RDP details (size/edge distance/stiffeners).
Anchorage appears on S-sheets (bolt size/pattern/edge distances; avoid "drill as needed").

When To Escalate
Escalate when mechanical equipment must be installed close to existing structural members and the required protection method conflicts with the structural engineer's requirements for the members. Mechanical-structural conflicts at existing framing are common in renovation projects and require the mechanical engineer and structural engineer to agree on the protection method before construction.
Rated Assembly Coordination
Equipment installed near or through structural members must not reduce the fire-resistance rating of those elements. Confirm penetration details preserve the rated assembly and that any framing modification is reviewed by the structural engineer.
Load Assumption Check
Equipment weights and reaction forces affect structural load paths. Confirm equipment weights used in the structural design match the final equipment schedule, including operating weight, seismic weight, and vibration isolation pad loading.
