Daily Code Talk #19 - IMC 301 (Part 2)

Practical Masterbuild guidance for IMC 301: what to show on drawings, what reviewers look for, and when to escalate for project-specific PE review.

Permit Proof Chain

01Installation BasisIdentify listing, manufacturer limits, and code trigger.
02Access / ClearanceShow service space and realistic field access.
03Coordination OwnerTie structure, electrical, plumbing, and architectural constraints together.
04Field VerificationConfirm the installed condition can be inspected and maintained.

: Fuel Gas, Listings/Labels, Electrical/Plumbing, Fuel & Vibration (301.6-301.13)

Plain English: Plain English Breakdown

301.6 Fuel Gas - All gas piping, gas-fired appliances, and venting follow the IFGC.

301.7 Listed & Labeled - Appliances must be listed for the application and installed per MI/report.

301.8 Labeling (Agencies) - An approved, independent agency tests representative samples and performs factory follow-up.

301.9 Nameplate Info - Permanent label with maker, model, serial, agency mark and key ratings (electrical, Btu/h, fuel, clearances).

301.10 Electrical - Wiring/controls per NFPA 70.

301.11 Plumbing - Potable/drainage connections per IPC.

301.12 Fuel Types - Match fuel and altitude; conversions only as approved and per MI.

301.13 Vibration Isolation - If spring-isolated, add supplemental restraint (snubbers/cables/limit stops).

On Plans: Why It Matters

Reviewers look for a tight proof chain: standard + edition โ†’ certification/report ID โ†’ exact model โ†’ MI page(s). Gaps trigger redlines (wrong vent system, missing fuel, no restraint on isolated gear).

Field Tip: What to Show (keep it visible)

M-001 (General): "Gas per IFGC. Electrical per NFPA 70. Plumbing per IPC. Appliances installed per MI and listing/evaluation report."

M-601 (Equipment Schedules): Basis of Design (mfr/model), Listing standard + edition, Certification ID (UL/ETL/CSA/AHRI), Fuel & altitude/derate, Electrical (V-Ph-Hz, MCA/MOP), Btu/h & efficiency, Clearances (or MI ref), Vent system type/listing per MI, Isolation and restraint.

M-501 (Details): Vent terminations/clearances, condensate, supports, restraint - with MI page callouts.

M-002 / M-603 (Sequences/Controls): Interlocks that protect labeling intent (parameters, safeties, alarms).

Key Point: Common Approved Marks (cite the actual ID): UL, Intertek/ETL, CSA, AHRI (performance), AMCA (air/sound).

Check: 60-Second Plan-Review Sweep

IFGC/NFPA 70/IPC notes are on the relevant sheets.

Each scheduled item shows standard + edition and a cert/report ID.

Fuel type

Venting is the listed system the MI calls for.

Isolation includes supplemental restraint.

Nameplate/clearance data aligns with schedules and MI.

Masterbuild QA Lens

Chapter 3 is where design intent meets installability. Access, listings, equipment location, support, protection, and coordination details determine whether the permit set survives the field.

Drawing / Submittal Check

Confirm equipment schedules, access clearances, service space, structural protection, utility connections, product listings, and installation notes line up with the plan view and details.

Common Review Risk

The reviewer may approve a concept, but the field can still fail if the set does not show access, support, condensate, clearances, or manufacturer installation limits.

When To Escalate

Escalate when an existing building limits access, when equipment is being installed in a constrained room or ceiling, or when the manufacturer's listing conflicts with the proposed installation.
