🧠 Plain English Breakdown•Authority (115.1): If work is unsafe or not per code/approved plans, the code official can issue a Stop Work Order (SWO).•Issuance (115.2): The SWO is written and given to the owner/agent/installer. All cited work stops immediately. The notice explains why and what must be done to resume.•Emergencies (115.3): In an emergency, the official can halt work without prior written notice.•Failure to comply (115.4): Working past an SWO (other than work to remove a hazard/violation) can trigger AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) fines and further enforcement. (MI = manufacturer’s installation instructions.)🏗️ Why It Matters in Design & ConstructionMost SWOs stem from three patterns:1. Deviating from the stamped set (installing something different than approved).2. Ignoring MI/listing limits (clearances, venting, supports, accessories).Concealing work before inspection (burying/covering without sign-off).3. To restart, treat it like closing a deficiency: correct to code and MI, document the fix (photos, marked sheets, listing/MI pages), pass reinspection, and obtain a written lift of the SWO before remobilizing trades.🔧 Field TipRun this 4-step restart path when an SWO lands:1. Stabilize: Stop affected work; post shutoffs; secure the area.2. Diagnose: Photo the issue; pull the approved detail, relevant MI pages, and listing IDs.3. Abatement plan: Email a one-page correction plan (code cites, fix method, timeline) and request a reinspection window.4. Resume only after clearance: Keep work visible; pass inspection; get the SWO release in writing. If you want a 1-page Stop-Work Response Kit (email template + correction log + resumption checklist), comment “STOP” and I’ll send it.
