This section explains how and when the IMC applies — especially in cases of conflict, existing systems, and special situations.🧠 Plain English Breakdown:•Conflicts: If there’s a conflict, the specific requirement wins. If different sections say different things, the most restrictive rule applies.•Existing Systems: Lawfully installed systems can stay, but additions/repairs must meet today’s code without making the old system unsafe.•Maintenance: All systems (new & existing) must be kept in safe, sanitary, and working condition. Maintenance follows ASHRAE/ACCA/ANSI 180.•Change in Occupancy: Changing building use? The code official must approve it to ensure no new hazards.•Referenced Standards: Chapter 15 standards apply unless they conflict with code — then the IMC rules.•Gaps: If something isn’t covered in the IMC, the code official decides.•Other Laws: Local, state, and federal law still apply.🏗️ Why It Matters in Design & Construction:•Prevents shortcuts: new work must meet current code.•Clarifies how to handle alterations, renovations, and occupancy changes.•Keeps older systems running legally but ensures upgrades aren’t unsafe.🔧 Field Tip: When working on an existing building: 👉 Always confirm with the AHJ whether your scope triggers new code compliance or if existing conditions can remain.Skipping this step is one of the top causes of plan review delays.
