We're launching IMC Section 401 as a focused three-part series. This is where plan review stalls when teams assume windows are enough, place intakes too close to streets or exhausts, skip hurricane/flood protections, or forget Chapter 5 for local contaminant sources.
We'll cover 401 in three parts:
Part 1 (401.1-401.3): Scope and when ventilation is required-natural vs mechanical; airtight dwellings per IECC/ASHRAE 90.1 must be mechanical; ambulatory care & Group I-2 go to 407; ventilation during occupancy only.
Part 2 (401.4): Outdoor-air intake location-clearances to lot lines/buildings and contaminant sources; vertical vs horizontal offsets near streets/alleys/parking/loading; flood-hazard elevations per IBC.
Part 3 (401.5-401.6): Intake protection & contaminant sources-louver/screen opening sizes, AMCA 550 in hurricane regions, IBC exterior-wall protectives; capture and exhaust of stationary sources with discharge to exterior per Chapter 5.
Why it matters: The fastest redlines on ventilation aren't CFM. They are intake siting/protection and using natural ventilation where mechanical is required (tight dwellings, ambulatory care, I-2). 401 turns these into a siting and compliance checklist you can resolve on the site plan before facades and louvers are locked.
Code Path: IMC Section 401.1 (Scope) -> Section 401.3 (When Required) -> Section 401.4 (OA Intake Location/Clearances) -> Section 401.5 (Intake Protection) -> Section 401.6 (Contaminant Sources). Then proceed to Section 402 (natural) or Section 403 (mechanical) based on the chosen method.
Section 401.3: Ventilation must be provided while the space is occupied - not just when the HVAC system is running.
Section 401.4: OA intake clearances from contaminant sources (plumbing vents, exhaust outlets, lot lines) must be met and shown.
Section 401.5: Intake screen and louver opening sizes, and AMCA 550 certification where hurricane conditions apply.
Check: Before You Submit
Confirm occupancy basis (occupancy category, design occupant load, net floor area) is stated on M-001.
Verify OA intake locations are shown on floor plan or roof plan with clearance dimensions to contaminant sources.
Confirm ventilation method (natural per 402 or mechanical per 403) is explicitly called out in the code summary.
Review Risk:
OA intake located too close to a plumbing vent, exhaust outlet, or property line - most common 401.4 plan review comment.
Natural ventilation claimed without showing the openable area calculation or operable opening dimensions on plans.
Ventilation requirement noted in the narrative but not traceable to a schedule CFM or diffuser tag on the floor plan.

Ventilation posts should translate code language into a permit-ready airflow story: occupancy, outdoor air quantity, intake location, exhaust relationship, controls, and any exception being used.
Drawing / Submittal Check
Verify the drawings show occupancy basis, ventilation method, outdoor air path, intake and exhaust separation, transfer air assumptions, controls, and schedule values that match the calculation.
Common Review Risk
The common review risk is an airflow value without a traceable basis. Another risk is showing outdoor air on a schedule while the plan, intake location, or control sequence tells a different story.
When To Escalate
Escalate for healthcare spaces, high-occupant-load areas, unusual contaminants, existing air handlers with unknown outside air capacity, or any project where pressure relationships matter.
Load Assumption Check
Chapter 401 establishes the ventilation framework that drives all downstream load calculations. Lock in outdoor air design conditions, ventilation method (prescriptive or IAQ procedure), and occupancy classifications before running any coil or equipment sizing.
Special Exhaust Coordination
For specialty exhaust, start with the contaminant and source. Then confirm capture method, duct material, routing, discharge, separation, controls, and whether another consultant or AHJ review is required.
