Definitions ยท IMC 202

Daily Code Talk - Chapter 2 Recap (IMC 2024)

Practical Masterbuild guidance for IMC 202: what to show on drawings, what reviewers look for, and when to escalate for project-specific PE review.

Permit Proof Chain

01Defined TermUse the code term that controls the requirement.
02Drawing LabelMatch plans, schedules, and details to the same terminology.
03Product BasisConfirm listings and assemblies match the term used.
04Review ResponseExplain the definition clearly if the reviewer challenges it.

We wrapped Chapter 2: Definitions. Here's what actually moves money and schedule:

201 - Definitions Path: IMC Ch. 2 controls first; if a term's not there, use IBC/IFC/IFGC/IPC; if still undefined, use ordinary meaning in context.

202 - General Definitions: Terms like appliance, equipment, plenum, fire/smoke/combination damper, ceiling radiation damper drive listings, clearances, materials, and inspection outcomes.

Plain English: How to keep projects clean

Lock definitions: Put the IMC 201 one-liner on the cover sheet and in Division 01.

Tag precisely: Call out the exact device (e.g., "COMBINATION FIRE/SMOKE DAMPER").

Plenum discipline: Use plenum-rated materials and wiring/insulation where that definition applies.

If you run high-stakes work and want approval-ready MEP packages, I can help align drawings, specs, and submittals to the definitions that the AHJ will enforce.

Comment "TERMS" for the Definition Control Kit.

DM "ADVISORY" for a fast code-risk audit.

Masterbuild QA Lens

Definitions are not academic. They decide which rule applies, which schedule label is correct, and which field device or assembly the reviewer expects to see.

Drawing / Submittal Check

Use the same term across plans, schedules, details, specifications, and responses. If the code uses a defined term, avoid casual substitutes that create interpretation risk.

Common Review Risk

A mislabeled device can make a compliant design look wrong. Common examples include appliance versus equipment, plenum versus duct, smoke damper versus fire damper, and combination assemblies.

When To Escalate

Escalate when a definition affects life safety, rated construction, hazardous conditions, healthcare spaces, or whether a product listing is acceptable for the intended use.

Rated Assembly Coordination

When rated construction is involved, the drawings should identify the assembly, damper type, access location, actuator/control basis, fire alarm interface if applicable, and who coordinates the opening.

Duct System Coordination

For duct and plenum items, check material limits, insulation continuity, vapor control, access, listed products, and whether the surrounding space changes the requirement.
